42-year-old KC man accused of raping woman in Overland Park

42-year-old Dereje Gebremariam of Kansas City has been charged with kidnapping and raping a woman in Overland Park after picking her up from downtown Kansas City. He said to the couple that he is an Uber driver.

It is shown by the court documents that on 7th of August, Gebremariam picked up a couple at the Power & Light District. The passengers thought that he is an Uber driver. However, that was not true as explained by the company spokeswoman on Thursday.

The couple was going back to a hotel in Overland Park when a motor vehicle was stopped at the request of the man as he needed to go to the bathroom. When the man got out of the car, the driver escaped with the woman present in the vehicle. The man reported the incident to the police. He also informed the cops that his cell phone and credit card were left in the vehicle.

Court documents showed that the driver later transported the woman to the hotel. He succeeded in his wrongdoing as the woman was not able to give consent or react in her defense as she was under the influence of alcoholic liquor.

The cell phones and credit card of the couple were found by the cops after they got a search warrant for Gebremariam’s apartment.

His charges included:

  • Rape
  • Aggravated kidnapping
  • Theft
  • Receiving stolen property

On Thursday, Gebremariam appeared in court.

His bond was set at $500,000.
