Former Augusta police officer sentenced for child sex crime
AUGUSTA, Kan. – Augusta Public Safety Officer Jerry Ballinger has been sentenced in relation to a child sex crime. Since 1997, he had been an officer in Augusta.
Jerry Ballinger was taken into custody in July 2013 on two counts of Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child. The crimes occurred in Butler county between April and July of 2013.
His trial was scheduled for August but he pleaded guilty in February to one count of attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child.
A judge sentenced Ballinger to 60 months of probation with Community Corrections on Monday.
Prior to the probation, he will serve 59 days under house arrest and if he violates probation then he will go to jail for 34 months.
He also has to register for life as a sex offender and enroll in a sex offender treatment program.
