Hutchinson Is Not The Worst Crime City In Kansas

Blog owner, Annie Sandmeier, in her blog “Only in Your state” listed the top 9 dangerous cities in Kansas which showed Hutchinson at the 1st position. Sandmeier used statistics provided by FBI for the year 2013.

She wrote that the number of different crimes in Hutchinson is:

  • 251 Violent crimes
  • 3 murders
  • 27 robberies cases
  • 2,264 property crimes cases

She listed the cities starting from the city with the highest crime rate and ending with the city with the lowest crime rate. The list is as follows:

  • Hutchinson
  • Wichita
  • Coffeyville
  • Topeka
  • Kansas City
  • Fort Scott
  • Great Bend
  • Concordia
  • Arkansas City

The method by which she calculated the number of different crimes and how she listed the cities is not confirmed.

After seeing the FBI statistic, the list was altered and Coffeyville was placed on 1st position.

2nd Wellington, Wichita placed on 3rd position, Hutchinson on No. 4, Iola on 5th position, Pittsburg on 7th, Topeka on 8th, Kansas City on 9th position, followed by Bonner Springs and McPherson.

According to the total number of crimes, Great Bend was placed on No. 15, Salina on No. 17, Dodge City on 35th position and Garden City on 42nd position.

Individuals who calculate the crime rate without examining all the variables that affect the number of crimes are warned by FBI. Many individuals just calculate the crime rate by the statistics available through individual reporting units and the calculation results come out incorrect. Variables include population density, economic conditions and the effective strength of law enforcement agencies as well. Some other variables are poverty level, income and job opportunities available to the individuals.

The blog owner’s information available on her blog shows that she is a mother and she loves God, family and chicken nachos.
